Godot
Also called godot engine, godot4
Free game engine with a small editor download. The process is Godot.exe. It is not Unity.
What you need to know
Godot is a small free editor. It is not Unity.

What is Godot?
Godot is a self-contained editor. There is no required hub. Unity Hub and the Epic launcher are other engines' installers.
If you have never used it
If you want a free engine without Unity Hub or the Epic launcher, download Godot from godotengine.org. You get a small editor exe. It is not Unity, and it will not open a Unity project.
What is it used for?
Scenes and nodes in Godot.exe. Unity scenes will not import as a project.
Pick the standard or .NET build from the download page. That is still Godot, not Unity.
Separate downloads for shipping builds. The editor zip is not every export target.
Who is it for?
- People who want a small MIT engine
- Students avoiding Unity or Unreal accounts
- Anyone comparing Godot 4 with Unity
Current status
Godot (2014) is a current free game engine from Godot Engine. The vendor still points Windows users at https://godotengine.org/download/windows/.
How old is it?
Godot 1.0 shipped in 2014. Godot 4 is the current major. A 3.x project needs a 3.x editor. Unity is a different company and a different project format.

Common problems
Opened a Unity folder in Godot
Different engine. Start a Godot project or keep Unity Hub for that folder.
Godot 4 cannot open a 3.x project cleanly
Use the 3.x editor or go through Godot's documented upgrade path.
Getting unstuck
Download from godotengine.org/download/windows
Standard or .NET build. Both are official. Steam also lists Godot. Skip random "Godot Pro" zips.
Install export templates from the editor
Project > Export will tell you if templates are missing. That is not Unity Hub modules.
Keep 3.x and 4.x editors if you maintain both
They are separate exes. The hub model from Unity does not apply.
Alternatives
Unity Hub plus a Unity editor. Unreal through Epic. Those accounts and project formats are different.

Related hardware
The editor is lighter than UE5. A modest discrete GPU still helps 3D. Any current Windows 10 or 11 PC Godot lists will run 2D work.
