Also called hand brake, handbrake transcoder
A video transcoder, not a player. HandBrake.exe is the process. It is not VLC.

What is HandBrake?
HandBrake is an open-source video encoder. The Windows executable is HandBrake.exe.
If you have never used it
HandBrake is a video transcoder. You pick a source and a preset and it writes a new file. It is not VLC. VLC plays video. HandBrake.exe does not replace a player. Download from handbrake.fr.
What is it used for?
Convert a file to MP4 or MKV. VLC can convert a little. This app is the encoder.
Stack jobs. Media Encoder is Adobe's queue. This is HandBrake.
NVENC and Quick Sync when HandBrake lists them. That is encode, not playback.
Who is it for?
- People shrinking a camera file
- Anyone who opened VLC looking for a ripper
- Editors who need a free encoder
Current status
HandBrake (2003) is a current video transcoder from The HandBrake Team. The vendor still points Windows users at https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php.
How old is it?
HandBrake started in 2003 around BeOS and DVD ripping. Current HandBrake is a GPL transcoder for many sources. VLC is the player sibling people confuse it with.

Common problems
Opened it as a player
There is no playlist. Open VLC to watch. HandBrake only encodes.
Hardware encode greyed out
HandBrake documents GPU encoders. Update the vendor driver first.
Getting unstuck
Confirm HandBrake.exe
Program Files\HandBrake is the app. vlc.exe is the player.
Install from handbrake.fr/downloads.php
The .fr domain is official. Random HandBrake.exe hosts are junk.
Read the Activity Log
A failed job names the source. Reinstalling Windows will not fix a bad rip.
Alternatives
Adobe Media Encoder and VLC's convert overlap. VLC does not replace HandBrake for a preset queue.

Related hardware
CPU encode is slow on purpose. A GPU HandBrake lists for hardware encode helps. Destination disk space matters.
