Jellyfin
Also called jellyfin server, jellyfin media server
A free media server that forked from Emby in 2018. The Windows server process is jellyfin.exe. It is not Plex.
What you need to know
Jellyfin is the free Emby fork. Plex is the account-backed commercial stack.
jellyfin.exe is the server. You do not pay Plex Pass and you do not sign in to plex.tv. Emby is the project it forked from, with its own Premiere fee.

- Need a Plex account?
- No
- Is it Emby?
- No. Jellyfin forked away in 2018
What is Jellyfin?
Jellyfin is a community media server. jellyfin.exe hosts the library and the web dashboard on Windows. Playback clients are extra.
If you have never used it
If you want a media server that does not require a Plex account or a Plex Pass, this is Jellyfin. Install the server from jellyfin.org/downloads on the PC or NAS that holds the files, then open the web UI. Clients are separate apps. It is not Plex. Plex wants a Plex sign-in for the remote-app story. It is also not Emby Premiere. Jellyfin forked away from Emby’s paid path.
What is it used for?
Index your folders without creating a Plex account. That sentence would be false on a Plex page.
The browser UI is the first admin surface. Official and community clients connect to your URL, not to plex.tv.
Community plugins extend metadata. There is no Plex Pass storefront sitting on top.
Who is it for?
- People who want a free server without a Plex login
- Admins who left Emby after the Premiere split
- Households willing to pick clients themselves instead of Plex’s app store
Current status
Jellyfin (2018) is a current personal media server from Jellyfin. The vendor still points Windows users at https://jellyfin.org/downloads.
How old is it?
Jellyfin forked from Emby in 2018 after Emby’s license direction changed. It is much newer than Plex 2008 and Kodi’s 2002 XBMC line. A guide that still says “Emby is the free one” is talking about a split that already happened.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release for the Windows server build Jellyfin publishes |
|---|---|
| RAM | The server wants RAM for libraries and transcode, per Jellyfin’s install docs |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Transcode when a client cannot direct play
- Disk demand
- The library on the server disks
- Network demand
- LAN and whatever remote access you set up yourself

The Windows server can install a service or a startup task so jellyfin.exe is up after sign-in. Clients do not need that.

Common problems
No official TV app in every store
That is the trade for no Plex account. You pick a client. Plex’s living-room apps are a different product.
People install only a client
Without jellyfin.exe or a Docker server somewhere, there is no library. The website is not a hosted Plex-like cloud.
Getting unstuck
Open the local web UI first
Jellyfin docs list the default dashboard URL after install. If that page is down, the server process is down. A phone client cannot invent a library.
Install from jellyfin.org/downloads
The project hosts Windows, Docker, and NAS packages. A random jellyfin.exe on a forum is the wrong file.
Hardware transcode is a server setting
Enable it in the dashboard if the docs say your GPU is supported. That is not a Plex Pass checkbox.
Alternatives
Plex if you want official apps and will accept an account. Emby if you want the project Jellyfin left. Kodi if you only need a living-room UI on this PC.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware
The server box needs disk and, for transcode, a CPU or GPU the Jellyfin docs list. Clients only play.
