Plex
Also called plex media server, plex app
A personal media server plus apps. The NAS or PC is the server. Plex.exe on Windows can be the client or the server UI. It is not Jellyfin.
What you need to know
Plex is the account-backed personal server. Jellyfin is the no-account fork path.
The files live on the server machine. Plex.exe on a laptop is often only a client. Remote access and some features expect a Plex account. Jellyfin does not.
- What is it?
- A personal media server plus apps
- Is the laptop the server?
- Only if you installed Plex Media Server there
- Same as Jellyfin?
- No. Plex uses an account and a paid pass
What is Plex?
Plex is a commercial personal media stack: a server that indexes your files, plus apps that play them. On Windows you may see Plex.exe, Plex Media Server.exe, or both.
If you have never used it
If you want your movie folder on a NAS to show up on phones and TVs, this is Plex. Install Plex Media Server on the box that holds the files, then sign in with a Plex account so remote apps can find it. The Windows Store or desktop app can be only a client. It is not Jellyfin. Jellyfin does not require a Plex account and does not sell Plex Pass.
What is it used for?
Index folders on a NAS or this PC. Jellyfin does the same job without a Plex account. Kodi is a living-room UI first, not this remote-app network.
Phone, TV, and browser apps talk to your server through Plex’s account. That remote path is a Plex product choice, not a Jellyfin default.
Hardware transcode and other paid features sit behind Plex Pass. Jellyfin does not sell that pass. Emby sells Premiere instead.
Who is it for?
- People who already have a Plex account and a NAS library
- Households that want official TV and phone apps more than a DIY server
- Anyone who should not confuse the Windows client with the box that actually holds the files
Current status
Plex (2008) is a current personal media server from Plex. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/.
How old is it?
Plex started around 2008 as a polished XBMC-era personal video product and grew into a hosted-account ecosystem. It is newer than Kodi’s Xbox Media Center roots and older than Jellyfin’s 2018 fork. A 2010 “just run the server, no account” memory is stale.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release for the apps Plex publishes |
|---|---|
| RAM | The client is light. The server wants RAM for libraries and transcode, per Plex’s server notes |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Transcode on the server when a client cannot direct play
- Disk demand
- The library lives on the server disks
- Network demand
- Remote streams and mobile sync
Installed processes
These executables belong to this product when it is installed.
| Plex.exe | Windows desktop app. Server installs also ship Plex Media Server.exe |
|---|---|
| Plex Media Server.exe | Library host when this PC is the server |
Startup components
Plex Media Server can start with Windows when this PC is the library host. The client app does not need that Startup row.
File locations
| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Plex\ |

Common problems
Client PC is not the library
Ending Plex.exe on the laptop does not stop a NAS server. Look for Plex Media Server.exe on the box that holds the disks.
Remote streams need a Plex sign-in
That account path is Plex. Jellyfin users who expected no login will bounce here.
Getting unstuck
Name the machine that has the files
Server settings live on the NAS or PC running Plex Media Server. The Windows app on the sofa PC is often only a player.
Install from plex.tv/media-server-downloads
Search ads still wrap Plex Media Server. The real packages are on plex.tv.
Check transcode before replacing a GPU
Remote clients may transcode on the server. Plex Pass and a supported GPU change that story. A weak NAS CPU is not a broken TV app.
Alternatives
Jellyfin if you want a free server without a Plex account. Emby if you want the project Jellyfin forked from. Kodi if you want a living-room library UI on this PC, not a remote-app network.

Related hardware
The server box needs disk and, for remote transcode, a CPU or GPU Plex documents. The client PC only needs a display.
