Microsoft Visio
Also called visio, ms visio
Microsoft's diagram app. The process is VISIO.EXE. It is sold as a separate license from Word. It is not draw.io.
What you need to know
Visio is a separate license. Word will not open a real .vsdx stencil set.
Desktop Visio is VISIO.EXE. Microsoft sells it apart from Word and many 365 plans. A free draw.io tab is not this executable.

What is Microsoft Visio?
Microsoft Visio is a diagramming program. Stencils and .vsdx files are the document. The Windows executable is VISIO.EXE. draw.io (diagrams.net) is a different vendor.
If you have never used it
If you need flowcharts, org charts, or network diagrams, this is Visio, not Word and not draw.io in a browser. Word can insert a SmartArt graphic. It does not open a .vsdx stencil library. Buy or assign a Visio plan. A Microsoft 365 Word-only install will not place VISIO.EXE.
What is it used for?
Connect shapes from Visio stencils. A Word canvas is not this stencil model.
IT and process diagrams that live as .vsdx, not as a .docx drawing.
Share a diagram without giving everyone a Visio license. Editing still wants Visio or a converter.
Who is it for?
- People whose job sends .vsdx files
- Admins who license Visio separately from Word
- Anyone comparing this window with a draw.io browser tab
Current status
Actively developed as Visio Plan 2 desktop and Visio Plan 1 web. This article is desktop Visio on Windows.
How old is it?
Visio began at Shapeware in 1992. Microsoft acquired it in 2000. It has always been a separate SKU from Word. Current Visio Plan 1 is web-first. This article is desktop VISIO.EXE.

Common problems
Visio missing from an Office install
Word setup does not add VISIO.EXE. You need a Visio plan or a Visio box.
People open a .vsdx in Word
Word may show a preview or fail. The editor is Visio, not WINWORD.
Getting unstuck
Confirm the SKU includes desktop Visio
Visio Plan 2 and Visio Professional include VISIO.EXE. Many 365 plans that include Word do not.
Open file location on VISIO.EXE
Office16\VISIO.EXE is desktop Visio. A diagrams.net tab is not this process.
Install from your Microsoft account Visio page
Do not download visio.exe from a filename mill.
Alternatives
draw.io, Lucidchart, and LibreOffice Draw overlap for diagrams. They do not replace a work stencil that requires desktop Visio.

Related hardware
A current Windows PC that runs Office will run Visio. Huge CAD-style pages want RAM more than a GPU.
