NVIDIA App

ApplicationNVIDIA

Also called nvidia app, nvapp, geforce nvidia app

NVIDIADrivers

NVIDIA's current GeForce overlay, GPU control center, and Game Ready or Studio driver installer. The window is NVIDIA App.exe. It is not GeForce Experience.

What you need to know

NVIDIA App is the current companion. GeForce Experience is the older one.

Use NVIDIA App to install Game Ready or Studio drivers, open the overlay, and change GPU settings. GeForce Experience is the retired companion. The kernel display driver is still a different package.

What is it?
Current NVIDIA overlay and driver app
Same as GeForce Experience?
No. This replaced that companion
Is it the display driver?
No. The driver is a separate package
Feex says
If a guide still says "open GeForce Experience to update the driver," I would look for NVIDIA App instead. Ending NVIDIA App.exe does not uninstall the display driver.

What is NVIDIA App?

NVIDIA App is the Windows companion NVIDIA ships for current GeForce and RTX cards. It installs drivers, hosts the in-game overlay, and exposes a GPU control center. It is not the display driver by itself, and it is not GeForce Experience.

If you have never used it

If you bought a GeForce card after 2024, this is the green NVIDIA window that offers driver updates and an overlay. Download it from nvidia.com. GeForce Experience is the older companion with a different exe. You can run a driver without this app. You cannot treat this app as the whole driver stack.

What is it used for?

Driver updates

Pull Game Ready or Studio drivers from NVIDIA. This is the installer UI, not nvlddmkm.sys itself.

In-game overlay

Record, filters, and performance stats. Afterburner plus RTSS is a different overlay stack.

GPU control center

Per-game settings and some display options NVIDIA moved out of the old Control Panel.

Who is it for?

  • People with a current NVIDIA GeForce or RTX GPU
  • Players who used GeForce Experience and need the replacement
  • Creators who pick Studio drivers from the same app

Current status

Actively developed. NVIDIA treats this as the supported companion. GeForce Experience still exists as a rollback, but NVIDIA no longer supports it as the current product.

How old is it?

NVIDIA shipped GeForce Experience in 2013 and the classic Control Panel long before that. NVIDIA App left beta in 2024 as the replacement companion. A 2018 "open GFE to optimize" guide is talking about a different program.

Versions

NVIDIA Control Panel (classic)

System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Minimum

Minimum system requirements
GPU A supported NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA documents the app for current GeForce and RTX families
RAM Enough RAM for Windows plus the games you launch. The app itself is a companion, not the game
Operating system A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per NVIDIA

Resource profile

CPU demand
Low when idle. Overlay and recording raise it
GPU demand
Overlay, filters, and capture use the NVIDIA GPU
Network demand
Driver checks and optional NVIDIA account features

Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Installed processes
NVIDIA App.exe Main companion window
NVIDIA Overlay.exe In-game overlay on many installs

Startup components

NVIDIA App can start helpers at sign-in so the overlay is ready. That is an NVIDIA setting, not a Windows service you should disable at random.

File locations

Common NVIDIA App locations
Typical install C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA App\

File formats

DLSMP4

Common problems

People hunt GeForce Experience instead

The current download is NVIDIA App. GFE is the older companion. Uninstalling this app does not remove the display driver.

Overlay fights another OSD

Afterburner, Discord, and this overlay can stack. Turn one overlay off as a test before you replace the GPU.

Getting unstuck

Confirm you opened NVIDIA App, not GFE

The current product name is NVIDIA App. GeForce Experience is a different installer NVIDIA kept only as a rollback path.

Install the driver from NVIDIA if the app will not open

nvidia.com/drivers still hosts Game Ready and Studio packages. The app is optional. The kernel driver is not this window.

Turn the NVIDIA overlay off before you blame the card

Settings in NVIDIA App control the overlay. Test that before you change Afterburner or Windows Game Bar.

Alternatives

AMD Software is the Radeon sibling. Intel Graphics Command Center is the Intel iGPU sibling. Afterburner is an overlay and overclock tool, not a driver installer.

Related hardware

This app only makes sense on an NVIDIA GPU. On an RTX 4070 class card it is the usual driver and overlay front door. It does nothing for an AMD or Intel-only PC.
