The work MFA app IT tells you to install. The Windows companion is OktaVerify.exe. It is not Microsoft Authenticator.

What you need to know

Okta Verify is work MFA. Microsoft Authenticator is a different app.

OktaVerify.exe and the Okta Verify phone app belong to an Okta tenant. Microsoft Authenticator serves Microsoft accounts and Entra. Authy is Twilio. You enroll with IT's QR, not a consumer storefront guess.

Feex says

If the sign-in page says Okta and you opened Microsoft Authenticator, I would install Okta Verify instead. I would not treat Authy Desktop as a workaround. I would ask IT which QR to scan.

What is Okta Verify?

Okta Verify is Okta's authenticator. OktaVerify.exe can exist on Windows for FastPass. Microsoft Authenticator is a different work or personal app.

If you have never used it

If IT said install Okta Verify, this is the work MFA app, not Microsoft Authenticator. You get it from the link or Store listing your Okta tenant names. OktaVerify.exe is the Windows companion for FastPass on some PCs. The phone app is still the usual factor. You do not download this from a consumer antivirus site. Authy is not a substitute for an Okta enroll QR.

What is it used for?

Approve Okta SSO

Push or number challenge for apps behind Okta. Microsoft Authenticator will not see that Okta prompt.

FastPass on a managed PC

Some tenants install OktaVerify.exe so the PC itself is a factor. That is Okta, not Windows Hello alone.

Phone app enroll

Most people still scan a QR in the mobile Okta Verify. The Windows exe is not the only client.

Current status

Actively developed. You get the build your tenant supports. This is not a consumer download brand.

How old is it?

Okta Verify grew with Okta's 2010s SSO. FastPass and device enrollment are newer. Current Windows bits are whatever your tenant pushes. A 2014 Okta Verify screenshot may miss FastPass.

Common problems

Wrong authenticator installed

Microsoft Authenticator will not complete an Okta enroll. Delete the wrong app and use the Okta QR.

FastPass blocked by policy

The Windows exe can be required or forbidden. That is IT, not a broken download from okta.com marketing.

Getting unstuck

Use the enroll link in your Okta dashboard or IT doc

help.okta.com explains Verify. A random "Okta Verify exe" host is not your tenant.

Phone first if IT did not push the Windows companion

Many orgs only require the mobile app. OktaVerify.exe is optional unless they said FastPass.

Do not enroll Authy as a substitute

Authy Desktop is retired. Even Authy mobile is the wrong vendor unless IT listed it.

Alternatives

Microsoft Authenticator when the tenant is Entra, not Okta. A hardware key if IT allows WebAuthn. Not a consumer VPN.
