Playnite
Also called playnite launcher
An open-source library that unifies Steam, Epic, and other launchers. The process is Playnite.exe. It is not Steam and it does not sell games.
What you need to know
Playnite lists other stores. It does not replace Steam.
Playnite.exe is a library. Clicking a game still starts Steam, Epic, or another client. LaunchBox is the emulator-front-end cousin, not this importer.
- What is it?
- Open-source library that unifies other launchers
- Does it sell games?
- No
- Same as Steam?
- No. It starts Steam for Steam games
What is Playnite?
Playnite is a Windows game library that talks to other launchers. Playnite.exe starts the real store client when you click a title.
If you have never used it
If you are tired of opening Steam, Epic, GOG, and Xbox to find one title, this is Playnite. Download it from playnite.link. It imports libraries those clients already own. It is not Steam. It does not sell you Half-Life. LaunchBox is a different product aimed at emulator front ends and a Big Box TV UI.
What is it used for?
Import Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox, and others. Steam cannot list your Epic weekly claims. Playnite can show both.
A living-room mode and plugins. LaunchBox’s Big Box is a paid TV UI aimed at emulators, not this open-source importer.
Playnite starts steam.exe or EpicGamesLauncher.exe for you. It does not replace those clients’ DRM.
Who is it for?
- People with games spread across Steam, Epic, and Game Pass
- Users who want an open-source unifier instead of Galaxy’s overlay
- Anyone who should not uninstall Steam after installing Playnite
Current status
Playnite (2017) is a current game library unifier from Josef Němec. The vendor still points Windows users at https://playnite.link/.
How old is it?
Josef Němec released Playnite in 2017 as an open-source unifier after every publisher shipped a launcher. It is newer than Steam and newer than LaunchBox’s 2015 emulator-front-end story. A 2010 “just use Steam Big Picture” guide is a different job.

Common problems
Imported game will not start
The error is usually in Steam or Epic, not in Playnite’s database. Repair the real client.
People uninstall Steam
Playnite cannot invent a Steam license. The Valve client still has to exist.
Getting unstuck
Install from playnite.link
The author hosts the build. A random Playnite.exe is the wrong file.
Re-scan the library library after a store repair
Playnite docs cover library updates. The files still live in the other launcher’s folder.
Disable a plugin if the UI fails to open
Extensions can break a boot. Safe mode is faster than a Windows reinstall.
Alternatives
GOG GALAXY’s overlay if you already live in Galaxy. LaunchBox if the library is emulators and you want Big Box. Steam Big Picture if you only own Steam games.
