What is LaunchBox?

LaunchBox is a Windows front end for local games and emulators. LaunchBox.exe is the desktop UI. BigBox.exe is the premium TV UI.

If you have never used it

If you want a handsome front end over ROM folders and emulators, this is LaunchBox. Download it from launchbox-app.com. Point it at your emulator cores and game files. Big Box is the ten-foot TV UI Unbroken sells. It is not Playnite. Playnite imports Steam and Epic as a unifier. LaunchBox is built for local and emulator libraries first.

What is it used for?

Emulator library

Index ROMs and point at emulators. Playnite can list emulators too, but LaunchBox’s product story is this catalog plus metadata scraping.

Big Box TV UI

A remote-friendly living-room mode Unbroken sells. Playnite’s fullscreen is a different open-source skin, not this Premium feature.

Local Windows games

Add a folder of exe games. Steam import exists, but the brand is still the emulator cabinet, not a store unifier.

People building an arcade or HTPC cabinet

Current status

LaunchBox (2015) is a current emulator and local front end from Unbroken Software. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.launchbox-app.com/.

How old is it?

Unbroken Software shipped LaunchBox in 2015 as a Windows emulator front end. Big Box followed as the living-room skin. It is newer than RetroArch’s 2010 libretro core idea and aimed at a different UI job. A 2008 HyperSpin theme pack is a different front-end generation.

Common problems

Empty after install

Add an emulator and a ROM path. LaunchBox does not ship games, and it does not invent a Steam library.

Big Box missing

Big Box is a Premium feature. The free tier is LaunchBox.exe, not a broken install.

Getting unstuck

Install from launchbox-app.com

Unbroken hosts the installer. A “LaunchBox plus 200GB ROMs” torrent is not this article.

Check the emulator exe path if a title flashes and dies

LaunchBox only starts the emulator you pointed at. RetroArch cores are a different frontend.

License Big Box on the account that paid

Support covers Premium activation. Reinstalling Windows will not recreate the license.

Alternatives

Playnite if you only want Steam plus Epic in one list. RetroArch if you want libretro cores without this metadata UI. Kodi if the living-room UI is movies.
