RetroArch

ApplicationLibretro

Also called libretro, retro arch

LibretroGames

A libretro frontend. Cores are separate downloads. The process is retroarch.exe. It is not a single console emulator.

What you need to know

RetroArch loads cores. It is not a single console emulator and not a store.

retroarch.exe is the libretro shell. Cores are separate. LaunchBox can wrap it. Playnite cannot replace a core.

What is it?
Libretro frontend. Cores are separate
One emulator?
No. Each core is a plugin
Does it include games?
No
Feex says
If retroarch.exe opened and no games show, I would install a core, then point at a folder you already own. I would not treat this as Steam, and I would not download a ROM pack from a banner ad.

What is RetroArch?

RetroArch is the libretro frontend. retroarch.exe loads cores. Each core is a separate emulator plugin, not a second retail game store.

If you have never used it

If you want one window that loads many emulator cores, this is RetroArch. Download it from retroarch.com. Then download cores from the Online Updater the docs describe. It is not a single SNES.exe. LaunchBox can sit in front of it as a pretty menu. Playnite is a store unifier, not this core loader.

What is it used for?

One frontend, many cores

Load a Nestopia core or a different SNES core. That is not “one console emulator” and not a Steam library.

Shaders and rewind

Libretro features the docs list. LaunchBox does not implement those. It only starts this exe.

Online updater for cores

Fetch cores from the project. This article does not ship ROM files.

Who is it for?

  • People who already have ROM files they have a right to use
  • Users who want one frontend instead of ten standalone emulators
  • Anyone pairing RetroArch with LaunchBox as the pretty menu

Current status

RetroArch (2010) is a current emulator frontend from Libretro. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.retroarch.com/.

How old is it?

Libretro and RetroArch grew from 2010-era multi-emulator work. It is older than LaunchBox and newer than standalone 1990s emulators. A “just run ZSNES” guide is a different exe.

Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Installed processes
retroarch.exe Main Windows executable

Startup components

RetroArch starts when you open it or when LaunchBox calls it. It does not need a Windows Startup row.

File locations

Common RetroArch locations
Typical install C:\RetroArch\

File formats

libretro corescontent files you add

Common problems

No cores after install

Use the Online Updater the docs describe. The frontend is empty on purpose until a core exists.

People expect a store

There is no catalog. You bring files you have a right to use.

Getting unstuck

Install from retroarch.com

Libretro hosts the Windows build. A “RetroArch plus ROMs” bundle is not official.

Install a core before you add a folder

Docs.libretro.com names cores. A missing core looks like a broken library.

Check the video driver if the menu is black

Settings > video. Try another driver before you reinstall a GPU driver.

Alternatives

Standalone emulators if you want one console. LaunchBox if you want a metadata UI in front. Playnite if the library is Steam, not cores.

Related hardware

A modest CPU runs many 2D cores. Later cores want a stronger GPU. This article does not invent benchmarks.
