LM Studio

What is LM Studio?
LM Studio is a desktop GUI for local GGUF models. It is not Ollama, not ChatGPT desktop, and not Hugging Face the website.
If you have never used it
If you want a window to browse and run GGUF models, LM Studio is that GUI. Download it from lmstudio.ai. LM Studio.exe is this product. ollama.exe is a different runner with a CLI-first story. ChatGPT.exe is still a cloud client.
What is it used for?
The catalog inside LM Studio. ollama pull uses a different library and folder.
A desktop chat window. ChatGPT.exe still calls OpenAI.
An OpenAI-compatible local port LM Studio documents. That is not ollama serve by name.
Who is it for?
- People who want a GUI instead of ollama CLI
- Users hunting GGUF files with a window
- Anyone who installed Ollama and wondered where the chat UI went
Current status
LM Studio (2023) is a current local model gui from LM Studio. The vendor still points Windows users at https://lmstudio.ai/.
How old is it?
LM Studio launched in 2023 alongside the local-model wave. It is the same generation as Ollama. Current Windows builds still update. A 2022 llama.cpp CLI-only setup is a different UX.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per LM Studio |
|---|---|
| RAM | The GUI is modest. The GGUF you load can want several to tens of GB |
Resource profile

- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

Common problems
Two local runners loaded at once
Ollama and LM Studio can both hold a model in RAM. That is two products, not a Windows memory leak by name.
Disk shock after a download
GGUF files are large. Ollama's blobs are a different cache.
Getting unstuck
Install from lmstudio.ai
LM Studio hosts the Windows build. A Studio AI pack on a freeware site is junk.
Confirm LM Studio.exe, not ollama.exe
Each has its own model directory. Deleting one cache will not clear the other.
Lower GPU offload or pick a smaller GGUF if the app crashes
That setting is inside LM Studio. ChatGPT.exe has no GGUF slider.
Alternatives
Ollama if you want a CLI and a simple service. ChatGPT or Claude if you want a cloud model. llama.cpp by itself is lower level.
