Minecraft Launcher
Also called minecraft installer, mojang launcher
The official launcher for Java and Bedrock. The process is often Minecraft.exe. The game you play is a different executable.
What you need to know
Minecraft.exe is the launcher. The game is a different process.
The official launcher starts Java or Bedrock. javaw.exe or Minecraft.Windows.exe is the session. Roblox is a different product.

What is Minecraft Launcher?
The Minecraft Launcher is Mojang and Microsoft’s official Windows front door. Minecraft.exe starts editions. It is not the simulation process.
If you have never used it
If you bought Minecraft, this is the official launcher that picks Java Edition or Bedrock. Download it from minecraft.net/download. Sign in with a Microsoft account. Minecraft.exe in Task Manager is often only the launcher. The world you walk in is javaw.exe or a Bedrock package. It is not Roblox, and it is not the game process this article is about.
What is it used for?
One launcher, two editions. Roblox is a different UGC platform. This window does not start RobloxPlayerBeta.exe.
Java profiles and Bedrock packages. Third-party launchers exist. This article is the minecraft.net client.
Mojang accounts migrated. A leftover Mojang login guide can be stale.
Who is it for?
- People who bought Java, Bedrock, or a bundle
- Parents who need the official installer, not a random jar
- Anyone looking at Minecraft.exe and thinking that is the world process
Current status
Minecraft Launcher (2009) is a current game launcher from Mojang / Microsoft. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.minecraft.net/download.
How old is it?
The Mojang launcher dates to the late 2000s Java era. Microsoft later added Bedrock on the Store. The unified launcher is the current front door. A 2012 “download minecraft.jar” ritual is obsolete and unsafe.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per minecraft.net |
|---|---|
| RAM | The launcher is light. Java Edition wants more RAM than the launcher |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Low for the launcher. High for the game
- Network demand
- Skins, Realms, and version downloads
Installed processes
These executables belong to this product when it is installed.
| Minecraft.exe | Official launcher, not the game world process |
|---|---|
| javaw.exe | Java Edition game when a Mojang JVM is running |
| Minecraft.Windows.exe | Bedrock package on many Store installs |
Startup components
The launcher does not need to start with Windows. Opening Minecraft starts Minecraft.exe first.
File locations
| Typical install | C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Minecraft Launcher\ |

Common problems
Launcher open, game already running
Ending Minecraft.exe may leave javaw.exe. Close the game window or the Java process.
Wrong edition
Java mods will not load in Bedrock. Help’s edition article is the check, not a GPU driver.
Getting unstuck
Install from minecraft.net/download
The official launcher is there. A “Minecraft premium exe” is bait.
Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the edition
A different login looks empty. That is licensing, not a missing Java install by itself.
Name the game process before you end tasks
Launcher is Minecraft.exe. Java Edition is usually javaw.exe. Bedrock is a Store package.
Alternatives
Third-party Java launchers exist for mod packs. This page is the official client. Roblox is not an alternative edition.
